Computer news -- linux
Hi All,
Just wanted to let you know that I grabbed the computer and have installed
Debian Linux 2.6. I have not created user accounts for you all yet. I'll
bring it down at some point.
I chose Debian because RedHat has gone to a paid license scheme (and is
dropping support for a lot of the older releases). The Debian guys are
actually under some Apache pressure to get to a new stable build, but the
2.6 is reportedly very good. Debian should be easier to administer than
other variants (like Slackware which ships with a super weak ftp
implementation)and should be okay as a java platform. Too bad Free BSD's
java stuff is flakey, because the one-time pad stuff is totally cool!
I've got a SQL server (Postgre I think not mySQL) up on it and we can go
with cvs and/or subversion. It looks like Apache comes with it too. Also
Open Office comes installed, but you can all choose Latex and Tex :-).
I'm not sharp on kerebos, but squid would be an easy install. And I think
that any number of web browsers can be nicely installed (like opera).
No DNS, no mail server (although I am interested in Post Fix, and SPAM
Assassin), and I have to get an approved IP address from support, but not
too bad a machine I think :-)
